RESTAURANT
T'would appear we have a bit of a not unsolvable problem. The question is
"Should we increase the amount of money we offer to potential suppliers of
our Friday evening repast, Hash Nosh?" In order to do that we would, of
course, have to increase the cost to the individual Hasher, mainly because
income has to exceed expenditure. OR is there another way to get the better
of, or at least combat, the said suppliers.
The general opinion is that we, round eyed, white skinned visitors to this
country, are being ripped off when we approach a restaurant with the idea
that we will provide 20, 30 or so consumers of their product. We tell them
that we will provide our own beer/wine/soft drinks and all they have to do
is feed us suitably. Over the last few months many of us have voiced the
opinion that the result of the hard work and negotiations conducted by the
Hares has NOT produced a good enough end result. " Not enough food" or "
terrible value for money" have been the cries. Sooooo what can we do to make
everybody happy.
We should not accept the often stated argument that the cost of raw
materials has gone up considerably over the last couple of years therefore
we have to increase the amount we offer a restaurant. Go into any Malay
eating house, anywhere on The Island, and have lunch. The amount and
quantity of food one can get for usually less than RM10 would satisfy any
Hasher on a Friday night. OK, we cannot, as a generalisation, use Malay
restaurants, nor can we compare lunch prices with dinner prices, but what
the comparison does is tell us that we should be able to get, in quality,
quantity and variety a meal to satisfy all Hashers, and for the amount we
offer. Right what can we do about it? Here are a few suggestions that future
Hares may find useful.
1. Before mentioning price to a restaurant consult the available menu and
choose say two or three dishes.
2. Stay away from whole fish, prawns and fried rice. Compared to steamed
rice, fried rice is not good value for money.
3. Set the cost per head at RM15. If a restaurateur cannot do for RM 15 play
the bluff game and go somewhere else.
4. Use your judgement and estimate the number of Hashers who will eat. Tell
restaurateur. (Lets use 30 Hashers as an example).
5. If, eventually, more than 30, say 35, show up DO NOT ring and adjust the
number. The GM will ask for five volunteers to go a la carte. These
volunteers will get their RM15 back from Hash Cash and go a la carte. (It is
thought that there will be no shortage of volunteers!). If less than 30 show
up then make the phone call and tell the restaurateur. This way we avoid the
situation where the food is already cooked, cannot be added to, and we end
up paying for 35 portions when only 30 were prepared in the first place. On
the other hand if only 25 show and we tell the restaurant we end up on the
positive side........we hope!
6. Insist on tables of NO MORE than six people. (Our lucky number is six,
not the Chinese eight!!). This way restaurateurs have to provide a
reasonable amount and value of food which can easily be monitored and not
buried in strength of numbers. For instance, on a table for six, a chicken
dish arrives with only four pieces of chicken, not enough for six. However,
if on a table of 10 and a chicken dish arrives consisting of eight pieces it
is not easily noticed that there isn't enough.
OK, hope the above notes are helpful. One last point. Hares please close the
Hash bar at 2230hrs. There are two reasons for this;
1. It becomes very embarrassing if a few of us we are still sitting around
after about 2230hrs in a family run restaurant, drinking our own beer (i.e.
not bought from them) when they would dearly love us to clear off so they
can pack up and go to bed. There is nothing in it for them, just nuisance
value.
2. Most of our Hares have had enough by 2230hrs and would like to go home.
It is unfair for a few folk to keep the Hares of the day around longer. If
folk want to hang around later then they can buy beverage from the
restaurant.
If anybody has any additions, suggestions or ideas please use the web site
to voice them. This note is as a result of the Steering Committee meeting
and since there are no decisions made here nothing needs to go to The Circle
but input is always welcome.
